For Once, Do Something That Isnt Sensible. Like Buying a Jeep Wrangler. Or Even Better, The Wrangler Renegade Model Featured Here. Jonathan Crouch Checks It Out

To buy a Jeep Wrangler, youve got to be something of a renegade. Perhaps its appropriate then, that this is the name given to the latest special edition version. Just fifty will be brought here, so those with spirits adventurous enough to justify an outlay of £16,300 on a car that makes virtually no practical sense will necessarily be thin on the ground.

But then, if everything we did and bought made practical sense, life would be very dull indeed. If you disagree, then turn the page. Still with me? Right, lets get into it. This is the car that off-road enthusiasts still refer to as the 'real' Jeep. And make no mistake, this is as real as 4x4s get. The Wrangler walked away with 4x4 Magazines 2002 Car of The Year award and was also judged class winner in the Hardcore category. Hardcore attributes are all well and good, but do they translate well into a market where customers want their 4x4s to increasingly resemble estate cars on stilts with all the implied refinements? Thats the problem the Wrangler faces in the UK and it needs to appeal to more than just a hardcore of nostalgists, instead making sense to the growing fraternity of leisure-loving twenty and thirty-somethings who are looking for inexpensive fun without the connotations of a nouveau label. 

For a price tag of £16,300, the Jeep Wrangler Renegade offers 174bhp (130kW) of power and 218 lb.ft (296Nm) of torque from a six-cylinder engine boasting a capacity of no less than 4.0-litres. The unit is easily capable of powering the car through 62mph in 9. 

9 seconds and on to a rather noisy top speed of 108mph. And despite its 4.0-litre power unit, it can still achieve an impressive 21.4-mpg on a combined cycle. 

Indeed, such is the Wranglers extraordinary value for money that when calculated on a bhp per pound basis, virtually nothing on sale today can beat it. Thats a 60 year-long experience curve for you.

The recipe still works too. The UK is now Chrysler Jeeps largest export market and Wranglers make up a significant slice of that pie. The Renegade will no doubt augment this position, although the limited run of just 50 vehicles will make this model a bit of a collectors item. It offers a number of extras for a nominal outlay over the standard £16,105 Wrangler 4. 

0 Sport. Most noticeable are the 15"x7" Ecco alloy wheels with macho 225/75R15 all-terrain tyres. Add to this a CD-player with seven speakers and a subwoofer system plus the choice of three colours (Flame Red, Solar Yellow and Electric Lime Green) and youve got yourself a car that will turn a few heads down the Kings Road. Safety equipment encompasses twin front airbags, height adjustable seatbelts and a high-level rear brake light. Locking wheel nuts and a SmartKey immobiliser should help keep thieving hands off your pride and joy, but it pays to remember that the basic layout of the Wrangler is never going to deter the determined villain from effecting an entry for more than a couple of seconds. 

One for the garage rather than the city street then. As with all Jeep models, the Wrangler Renegade comes complete with a full peace-of-mind warranty package and European roadside assistance cover for three-years or 60, 000 miles, whichever comes first. They also throw in a seven-year unlimited mileage anti-corrosion guarantee. Otherwise, this Wrangler benefits from all the incremental changes and improvements that have kept the model popular without overly diluting the bloodline. 

In the past, Wranglers were great - as long as you kept them off road. On the tarmac, the ride and refinement they served up were so basic that if you took your granny for a ride in one it was reasonable form to provide her with a glass for her dentures before they went whistling into the footwell come the first bump. Jeeps Quadra Coil suspension system, originally designed for the luxury Grand Cherokee, offers hugely improved ride and tauter handling. Off the tarmac, there are equal benefits in terms of suspension travel and wheel articulation. 

In the metal, the Wrangler actually looks rather small and neat, even without the white army stars and khaki-green paint we've got used to seeing in the Frank Sinatra films. You can't wait to jump into the cab, open a fresh pack of gum and crash the transmission into first. A spell behind the wheel brings recollection of the airbase at Burtonwood, the camp at Knutsford, the nylons smuggled out from Warrington and Liverpool and the GI brides. Even the kids identify with it, either as an accessory for Marlboro Country or as Daisy Dukes runabout from Hazzard County. Off road, a Wrangler can still shake your teeth out if you're a little liberal with the power over uneven ground. The upside is however, that you're unlikely to bottom out the chassis, even over the sharpest of dips. Superb ground clearance helps here; not for nothing do the Yanks call this the King of off-roaders. If youre actually serious about riding the rough stuff, though, the 4.0-litre engine in this Wrangler can be a bit of a handful if youre a bit gung ho with the loud pedal. 

Best to keep it for the occasional hilarious blast off road to remind yourself how far both road-making techniques and vehicle suspension has progressed since the Iron Age. Despite the extra rear seat room, if you're carrying a couple of Marlboro men in the back theyd better be quite friendly as the rear bench isnt overly wide, squeezed between the wheelarches as it is. The stowage area behind the back seat is tiny, reached by hinging up the rear window and swinging aside the lower tailboard. You could go on picking holes all day of course, but thats hardly the point. According to the US Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Wranglers aren't classified as cars anyway, so its futile trying to criticise them as if they were. Best to use one as a second car, a weekend plaything thats a whole lot more practical than a jet ski or a microlight. Then the Wrangler makes all kinds of sense, and helps to explain why Jeep has one of the wealthiest customer demographics of any manufacturer. The Wrangler Renegade offers blinding value and a rugged personality without moving the game on significantly. 

Its prospective customers wouldnt have wanted it any other way.
